GENERAL INFORMATION
ABOUT Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina.

It is known for its preserved eclectic European architecture and rich cultural life. Buenos Aires held the 1st Pan American Games in 1951 and was the site of two venues in the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, Buenos Aires hosted the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2018 G20 summit.

Buenos Aires is a multicultural city that is home to multiple ethnic and religious groups, contributing to its culture as well as to the dialect spoken in the city and in some other parts of the country. This is because since the 19th century, the city, and the country in general, has been a major recipient of millions of immigrants from all over the world, making it a melting pot where several ethnic groups live together. Thus, Buenos Aires is considered one of the most diverse cities of the Americas.

The City as a Conference Destination:

Buenos Aires is served by the Ezeiza International Airport, which is also known as the Ministro Pistarini Airport. Located just 13 miles outside of the city, Ezeiza International is connected to Buenos Aires by the General Ricchieri Expressway. The airport offers a number of ground transportation options for Buenos Aires travelers.

Buenos Aires meeting venues include the 742-room Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center has room for up to 1,800 persons. Elsewhere, Centro Costa Salguero, with six halls and five salons, has a maximum capacity of 5,000 persons for conventions, 3,200 for receptions and 1,800 for banquets; and La Rural has an auditorium, four lounges and four pavilions - of which the largest, Yellow (or Pabellon Amarillo), measures more than 9,290 square meters. With a population of close to three million (its metropolitan area has more than 12 million) people, known as portenos, or "people of the port," speak Spanish with a decided accent, its ll sound pronounced with a "sh" sound, not with the more common "yay" sound.

Food Options for Conference Delegates

Food and entertainment opportunities in Buenos Aires are endless. Explore some of its best offerings:

Don Julio

Its striped awning on a cute corner lures you in: step through the wooden doors and come face to face with all sizes of steaks sizzling on the indoor parrilla (grill). Walls covered with signed wine bottles show diners' approval; now all you want is to devour your beef. Luckily, this is the tastiest you can find—you've come to the mecca.

Chori

It's hard to miss the lively Palermo corner with bunches of sausages hanging in the window. The walls are covered in bright yellow chorizo cartoon pop art, designed by local artist Alan Berry Rhys. If you love the choripán, you'll probably fall hard for Chori, which puts a modern twist on the classic sausage sandwich. The menu might only have a handful of choripán options, but it's hard to choose which sandwich reigns supreme.

Salvaje Bakery

There is no actual door at this bakery inside an old garage, just an open kitchen and small eating area that looks onto the Dorrego street. Salvaje ups the bread game in BA with their wonderful sourdough loaves. While most people will take the bread home, there are a few tables and stools for snacking. Head straight for the bread basket breakfast special to understand how Argentines do their simple morning meal. Each basket comes with a choice of butter, jam, dulce de leche, or olive oil.

Buenos Aires Attractions for Convention Attendees

Elegant yet always bustling, Buenos Aires encapsulates the very essence of Argentina. South America's second largest city, Buenos Aires is the political, economic, and cultural capital of Argentina, as well as the gateway to the rest of this large nation.

Its compact tree-lined center is reminiscent of Paris, with many charming corners where tidy high-rise apartments are interspersed with attractive 19th-century buildings. Most first-time visitors are surprised to find that this big city has managed to preserve its old traditions. Each of its 47 "barrios" boasts its own distinct character, and you'll never tire of exploring these delightful neighborhoods.

Among the most popular are Palermo, La Recoleta, and Belgrano, with their wide boulevards lined with palatial mansions, luxury high-rises, and large parks. Also fun to explore are San Telmo and La Boca with their distinctively colorful artistic flair. In the downtown core, the Plaza de Mayo is the traditional focus of entertainment and activity, while Avenida Santa Fe is the city's most fashionable shopping area.
